Pros And Cons Of Dating A Co Worker

Pros And Cons Of Dating A Co Worker
The office romance is a thing of joy and of confusion for many people. It's natural to fall in love with co-workers; after all you're with them for most of your week. However, there are problems that come along with dating a co-worker as well as consequences. We've assembled a panel of people who have had or are having an office affair to list the pros and cons of those relationships.

    PROS

"An office romance could turn out to be the love of your life"

    1) YOU HAVE A GO TO TOPIC OF COMMUNICATION

Most people get together and talk about work. It's nice to have common grounds to talk with someone and if you date a co-worker that topic is built in. You know who your girl is complaining about and she understands why you think Jack on the 4th floor is a prick. You'll never have awkward silences in a conversation, even starting out the relationship. It helps if you both feel the same way about your job.

    2) SAVE ON GAS

It's not exactly a 'relationship' perk, but it's a perk in our book. Gas is expensive and if you only have to drive to one place every day you're saving a ton of money. That money can go to buying beer to drink while you complain about work. It's also nice to be able to make plans with someone in the car instead of playing text tag all day.

    3) EASY TO SNEAK IN TIME TOGETHER

When you date a co-worker every lunch has the chance to be a lunch date. For new couples this is especially important as it gives them a little chance to connect. If you're good, you could also sneak time alone in the copy room for a quickie. We don't advice that, but you know, if that's something you're both into, more power to you.

    CONS

"It's hard to find some space for yourself"

    1) YOU COULD COMPETE FOR POSITIONS

The business world is a cut throat place these days. If you and your lady are in the same department or on the same level it could mean that you're going to be up for the same promotions and transfers. A little healthy competition never hurt anyone, but it's hard to quell wounded pride when your girlfriend makes project manager over you. If you can't handle defeat well, this could burn you in the long run.

    2) BOSS WON'T LIKE IT

Most places of business have rules against dating in the chain of command. The fear is that you would give your girlfriend special treatment and shaft other co-workers. For this reason, many people have to keep their office romances a secret from co-workers and bosses. While the sneaking around is fun at first, it gets really old quickly. Announcing your dating to your boss can also make for uncomfortable transfers and departmental shifting.

    3) NEVER GET AWAY FROM THEM

The biggest consequence in our minds is that you never get away from your girlfriend. She's there all the time. She's at work; she's at home, everywhere. For some couples this is a dream come true, but for most of us, we need some time to fly solo. Dating your co-worker, doesn't allow for that. Instead, it means that you're pretty much always a matched set and free time or time alone has to be planned.
